We value our families and consider parents our partners in their child's treatment at Green Chimneys. We encourage parents to participate as much as possible by maintaining open communication with team members and attending treatment meetings and annual review IEP meetings. Throughout the year, our staff provides many opportunities for parent involvement. Parents and families are invited to school and public events to enhance their experience as members of the Green Chimneys community.

Parents are Encouraged to Stay Connected

Parent Communication and Feedback
Parents are a key part of each child’s academic and treatment program and can be the greatest advocates for a child at Green Chimneys, and beyond. We encourage continuous and ongoing communication with teachers and clinicians, including participation all meetings pertaining to a child's individual plan. Skype is available.

Parent Training Sundays
Parent training is offered one Sunday per month from September through April. Facilitated by Green Chimneys clinicians, workshops incorporate Kazdin’s Parent Management Training (KPMT), developed by Alan Kazdin, Ph.D., of Yale University, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) for Children, adapted by Francheska Perepletchikova, Ph.D., of Weill Cornell Medical College. Both of these evidence-based (they work!) methods are taught to help families learn to manage children’s behaviors, and decrease their child's, and their own, emotional vulnerability. Workshops are from 10:30am-12pm with a break for lunch followed by smaller group sessions from 1-2:30pm to address questions and practice skills.

Parent Satisfaction Surveys
This ongoing tool assists administrators with program planning and offers parents and guardians an opportunity to participate. Surveys are sent at various points during the school year.

Green Chimneys Parent Association
The Green Chimneys Parent Association (GCPA) offers a wonderful opportunity to meet other families and open up dialogues regarding student programs, parent concerns, and ways to support the students and families of Green Chimneys School. The GCPA President represents parents at the Green Chimneys Board of Director meetings on important matters concerning families. The GCPA was ratified in 2009, has its own bylaws and elected officers, and participates in all Green Chimneys special events and fundraisers. This is where Green Chimneys parents from all programs come together to make a difference...and they do!

Participation is free and highly encouraged. To connect with the GCPA, submit a Parent Association contact form.

Annual Events
The Green Chimneys campus is alive and active with year-round events.

September – School Open House offers the opportunity to become familiar with the education program and school-related activities a child participates in as part of their regular schedule.

October – Parent/Teacher Conference is an opportunity to meet classroom teachers and discuss a child’s progress in school.

November – Annual Parent Retreat is held during the first weekend in November at the Green Chimneys Clearpool Campus in Carmel, NY. The Retreat offers a full array of informational seminars, fun activities, and networking with other parents; as well as meals and overnight accommodations.

February & March – Families are invited to be part of the 4H audience twice during these months: Our annual 4H Public Speaking event gives students an opportunity to demonstrate their learned public speaking skills by presenting a project about a researched topic. At a separate event, students demonstrate their knowledge to 4H judges and the audience about a small farm animal of their choice during the 4H Small Animal Fair.

April – Spectrum Family Day brings together the Spectrum community for a day filled with fun activities and opportunities to connect with other families.

June – Birds of Prey Day is a public event held on the Brewster campus where area falconers bring their birds for show and demonstrations, along with other outdoor marvels and vendors.

July – Family Picnic at our Clearpool campus is for all families and includes lunch, canoeing, fishing, swimming, hiking, and relaxing under the shady willow trees.

August – Alumni Day offers discharged students an opportunity to return and reconnect with friends and staff, both current and past. It's a celebratory day open to former students and staff and their families.
